Gwassi Integrated Community Empowerment Program (GICEP) is a 5-year REK funded program which intends to contribute towards holistic development of children in Gwassi Division. The program’s long term goal is to contribute to holistic development (spiritual, physical, mental, emotional, social well being) of children in Gwassi through increased social, political and economic empowerment for self reliance. The child centered development program’s main outcomes are increased social resilience of 7,000 households in Gwassi Division by 2019, improved access to education for 14000 children in pre-primary, Primary and Secondary school in 70 villages in Gwassi Division by 2019 and increased participation of 2450 youths aged 15 – 27 years in socio-economic activities in Gwassi division. The program also aims at enhancing the capacity of local community structures and program implementation staff to implement in Child Centered Community Development in Gwassi Division.

The program’s primary target is children, youth and families drawn from marginalized poor and vulnerable households in 70 villages in Gwassi Division in Homabay County of Kenya. The program works with a total of 350 SHGs consisting of old and newly formed SHGs (5 SHGs per villages with average of 20 per members SHG), 35 CLAs (Each CLA will consist of 10 SHGs) directly benefiting 7000 households. It is approximated that each household will have an average of 2 children per SHG household translating into 14000 children. The program will recruit a total of 800 children Ambassadors and 2450 youths (35 youths per village per year) to access Technical, Vocational and Agricultural skills training and business development services in next 5 years. It is estimated that program will indirectly reach up to 28,000 people by the end of the 5 year period with a possibility of extending to all the 187 villages through replication by the CLAs/CBOs after the funding period. The program implements in three thematic areas categorized in the following projects in the Gwassi Integrated Community Empowerment Program:

PROJECT 1: Community Resilience for Sustainable Livelihood:

The main goal of this project is to increase social resilience of 7,000 households in Gwassi Division by 2019. The project aims at increasing the social resilience of poor households through better functioning of community structures (SHGs, CBOs, YGs, WGs). The project also aims at increasing household resilience of 7000 households in 70 villages through various capacity building interventions aimed at social, economic and political empowerment and is strongly embedded on the self help approach.

PROJECT 2: Quality basic education (Early Childhood, Primary and Secondary Education)

The main objective of this project is to improved access to education for 14000 children in pre-primary, Primary and Secondary school in 70 villages in Gwassi Division by 2019. The project will create awareness on child rights and basic education in 56 schools through community structures. It will establish youth and children’s groups in 70 villages and recruitment of 800 Child Ambassadors in 14 villages in the program area to address children’s issues that affect their holistic development

Project 3: Youth Technical Vocational and Agricultural (TVET/AVET) Skills Training & Business Development Services:.The main objective of this project is increased participation of 2450 youths aged 15 – 27 years from Gwassi division. The project aims at providing relevant Technical vocational and Agricultural, life skills and business development services to at least 2,450 youths. The project also provides coaching and mentorship in business, entrepreneurial skills and life skills for at least 2,450 out of school youth.
